Image Compressor: free online, private and unlimited

How it works

This tool runs entirely in your browser, so no server uploads are required. Add your images and the compression starts straight away. Each file shows its original size, the new size and the percent saved. Use the quality slider to fine tune the result, open the comparison view to check it against the original, and save each image or everything as a ZIP.

JPEG compression

For JPG photos the quality slider controls the balance between size and detail. A value around 70 to 80 percent gives a big reduction with very little visible loss on most images. Lower values create smaller files with more visible compression artifacts. If the result would be larger than the original, the tool keeps the original file for you instead. For even smaller files consider converting to WebP with Convert image.

PNG optimization

PNG images are reduced with a smart palette, up to 256 colours, which works very well for logos, icons, screenshots and illustrations. Transparency is preserved. The same slider controls how many colours are kept. If your PNG is a photograph or has smooth gradients, a palette can look rough, and converting it to JPG or WebP will usually give a smaller and better looking file.

WebP compression

WebP uses lossy compression similar to JPEG and typically produces smaller files at similar visual quality. Choose WebP as the output format to convert JPG and PNG files while you compress them. More about WebP on the Compress WebP page.

Resize for even smaller files

Large photos from phones and cameras often have far more pixels than a website needs. Use the Limit width option to scale wide images down while compressing, or use Resize image to set exact dimensions.

Privacy and security

All image processing happens in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored. When an image is re-encoded, metadata such as EXIF, GPS location and camera details is not carried over. If the tool cannot make a file any smaller it keeps your original, and that file is returned unchanged.

Free and unlimited

No registration, no daily limit and no watermark. Compress as many images as you need, one by one or in bulk, whether you are speeding up a website, saving storage or fitting an email attachment limit. Working with PDFs too? Try Compress PDF.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress an image without losing quality?

Keep the quality slider around 75 to 85 percent and use the comparison view to check the result. At this range most photos look the same but are much smaller.

Which format gives the smallest file?

For photos WebP is usually smallest, then JPG. For logos and screenshots with few colours, PNG with a reduced palette is often very small.

Can I compress many images at once?

Yes. Add as many images as you like and download them together as a ZIP.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. Compression is done locally in your browser.

Is the metadata removed?

Yes, for every image that is re-encoded. The compressed copy does not carry the original EXIF, GPS or camera information. A file that could not be made smaller is returned as the original.

Is this tool really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no daily limit and no watermark.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The tool runs in your browser, so your files stay on your device.

Does it work on mobile and tablets?

Yes. It works in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on desktop, tablet and phone.
